As some of you lovely people may already know, we recently travelled down to Westport in County Mayo for a visit to Westport House and thier Winter Wonderland experience. To be fair, I haven’t stopped talking about it to be honest, but I won’t apologise, as we had a fantastic time, as you can read in Westport House Winter Wonderland.
We’re fond of Westport, and have stayed in several places there but this time we were made very welcome by the Westport Coast Hotel, an absolute gem of a 4* hotel overlooking Clew Bay and with views of Croagh Patrick. We drove down on an extremely stormy, windswept night, and the hotel’s warm, glowing windows were such a welcome sight, and the staff were even warmer – attending to us promptly and checking us in very quickly and efficiently.
The hotel has a stylish, warm decor and the lobby is large and comfortable, and we spent many times gathering together there on the comfy sofas before we headed out as a family on our outings over the weekend. As for the room, we were very kindly upgraded to a Presidential Suite and it was most certainly able to live up to its name. It was extremely spacious and had a really comfortable living area with a sofabed for the kids, and I can’t even describe how gorgeously comfortable our bed was – I’ve never slept so well! The televisions have free Netflix – so it was a Hunger Games marathon for us after the kids fell asleep. What else? (I know what you’re thinking – you naughty people!)
The hotel had left lots of lovely little touches for us, complimentary wine and choccies as well as some delicious biscuits – it was a kind gesture that really made us feel welcome. There was even a fancy coffee machine which the G Man was pretty pleased about! And on the topic of food….one of my favourite subjects as we know…the breakfast was absolutely gorgeous. The choice on offer was practically endless – from hot breakfast buffet to lots of fruit and pastries and even a pancake maker – a real hit with Amelia! Breakfast can be enjoyed in thier rooftop restaurant that has amazing views of Clew Bay on one side and Croagh Patrick on the other, and even with the pelting rain and twisting wind, we felt so cosy and cocooned inside, enjoying our tea and other breakfast delights. The staff were so helpful and attentive, even offering to wash Adam’s bottles for me when I requested some washing up liquid to do it myself – really kind.
We also enjoyed use of the pool during our stay. The hotel has that unusual and unique quality of being stylish and luxurious, as well as being completely family friendly; so the pool was availble to children for certain set hours – very clever and a good way of catering for all types of customers, I think. I’d love to go back sometime just the G man and I for some spa treatments as a little glimpse into the spa really looked fantastic. Our time in the pool was great though, there’s lots of space for many families to enjoy the water and a plethora of towels are provided and there’s also plenty of pool noodles etc for the kids to enjoy, and even a little shallow, separate wading area for little ones.
On our second night, we enjoyed a meal in The Coast Bar, the main downstairs restaurant. We had to change our time due to the Wee Man’s naptime and the maitre’d was so accommodating. We were given a great table and high-chair without any hassle. The food was absoutely fantastic, I enjoyed a really tasty mushroom pasta dish, the kids devoured thier dinners and my husband and in-laws enjoyed burgers, curry and chicken. The service was absolutely great, too.
We really felt so much at home in this hotel – it has a warm, inviting, and homely feel, yet it is modern and stylish and would easily suit any type of customer, from a young couple sharing a quiet weekend to a noisy (yet loveable!) family of four from Belfast…ahem! We stayed two days but we all agreed we could easily have stayed a week, or even a month.
I really can’t wait to go back again soon – we spend a lot of time in Westport and it will be the first place I think of when I return. Thanks to all the staff for what was a really memorable and enjoyable experience for our whole family.
See you soon, Westport Coast Hotel!
